with the most significant prehistoric, Illyrian, ancient, Byzantine and medieval monuments – Ščitarjevo near Zagreb (Roman city Andautonija, the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb), Sisak (Roman city Siscia, City Museum Sisak, a Roman villa in Osekovo) Varaždin spa (Archaeological park Aquae Laesae), Krapina (Neanderthal Museum), Pula (Amphitheatre, Temple of Augustus, Hercules Gate, the Archaeological Museum of Istria), Brijuni Islands (Villae Rusticae and Castrum), Zadar (Forum), Skradin (Amphitheatre Burnum), Solin (Colonia Martia Ivlia Salona), Split (Diocletian’s Palace) Vid near Metkovic (Colonia Ivlia Narona), Dubrovnik (UNESCO, the medieval walls, Stradun).

 

1.day: ZAGREB/ Arrival, accommodation at the hotel. City tour, tour of the Upper and Lower Town, Ban Jelacic Square, Tkalčićeva Street (Tkalčićeva ulica), Lotrščak, Stone Gate (Kamenita Vrata), Bloody Bridge (Krvavi most), Cathedral, Dolac, Zrinjevac … Archaeological Museum and the tour of the prehistoric, ancient and medieval collections. Free afternoon to relax.  Dinner in a typical restaurant in Zagreb with the musical program. Overnight.

 

2.day: ANDAUTONIJA –SISAK –OSEKOVO/  After breakfast short drive towards Ščitarjevo and tour of the Roman city Andautonia. Archaeological park is situated 12 kilometers from Zagreb. Tour of the Roman streets, public bath, public buildings, Roman necropolis … The tour is continued with short driving towards Sisak (Celtic Segestica). Tour of the old castle and cylindrical towers, visit to the Museum of Sisak and tour of ancient Siscia collection. Shorter ride to village Osekovo where the lunch will be served at the farmhouse Bistrički. After lunch we will take a tour of the archeological site of a Roman Villa (Ciglenice) escorted by an animator dressed as Ceasar and transported with old traditional trailors. Time to walk and rest on the farm Bistrički. Back to Zagreb, dinner at the hotel. Overnight.

 

  1. day: VARAŽDINSKE TOPLICE – KRAPINA / Breakfast. Drive to Varazdin Spas / Archaeological Park Aquae Laesae. This impressive complex is one of the best preserved Roman sites in Croatia. A tour of the remains of Roman baths, which flourished from the 1st – 4th century, and the Museum, where is placed a marble statue of the Roman goddess Minerva dating from the 2nd century BC. The trip continues to Trakosćan, where lunch will be arranged at the base of the castle. A tour of the castle Trakošćan (13th century, one of the most beautiful and best preserved castles in Croatia), which was owned by the noble family Draskovic. Walk through romantic gardens and by the lake. Departure to Krapina. Visit the Neanderthal Museum and check out the exhibit – a time machine of the history of the universe, the earth, man … with special emphasis on the Neanderthals. Walk to archeological sites on Hušnjakovo hill above the museum. Back to Zagreb, dinner and overnight.

 

  1. day: PULA/ After early breakfast, departure from Zagreb. Drive to Pula in Istria, the city with the most preserved Roman monuments. Hotel check-in and lunch, followed by the tour of the city’s treasures. Tour includes: The Temple of Augustus on the Roman Forum, dedicated to the goddess Roma and Emperor Augustus/ dating from 2.st. BC; Hercules’ Gate and the magnificent Amphitheater, built during Emperor Vespasian in the 1st century BC. A tour of the permanent exhibition “Olive oil and wine making in ancient Istria” with a large number of amphoras. Followed by a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Istria, with the largest collection of Roman monuments. Dinner and overnight.

 

  1. day: BRIJUNI / Bus ride to Fažana and boat boarding for Brijuni Islands. Islands are famous for a large number of archaeological sites with the Roman, Byzantine and medieval remains. On the island of Veliki Brijuni, the Gulf Veriga, visit to the largest Istrian residential complex – Villa Rustica / representative peristyle, atrium and portico with its loggias ending with a large terrace overlooking the sea. In the complex you can find three temples (Neptune, Mars and Venus), library, spa, patios and gardens. Break for lunch at one of Brijuni restaurants. Visit to the Kastrum, most peculiar Brijuni site which covers an area of more than 1 hectar. Findings from the era of the Roman Republic and Empire, Late Antiquity, Ostrogoths, Byzantium, Venice … arethe testemony to the long-term settlement of the islands. A tour of the nearby church of St. Mary / nave church from the 5th century, which in the 13th century belonged to the Templars, and with the abolition of their order, the life in it died. Return trip to Fažana and return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.

 

  1. 6. day: ZADAR –SKRADIN –SPLIT / Early breakfast and departure to Zadar. Upon arrival, a tour of the Roman Forum / dating from 1 to 3rd century AC, and religious complex on its ruins and the Church of St. Donat. This site testifies about two thousand years of uninterrupted public, cult and cultural life in the area. Zadar, ancient Roman city, was (after Salona) the second largest city in the Roman province of Dalmatia, with its impressive architectural complex, the largest in the eastern part of the Adriatic. Break for lunch in the city, followed by a short ride to Skradin and the tour of the Amphitheater Burnum in the Krka National Park. Amphitheater was built as a gift to Emperor Vespasian. It is situated on the left bank of the river Krka, on the hill near the village Puljani. We continue driving to Split. Hotel check in, dinner and overnight.

 

  1. day: SOLIN-SPLIT / Breakfast at the hotel, a short drive to the nearby Solin where are the remains of the ancient city of Salona (4th century BC). Julius Caesar proclaimed Salona as the center of the Roman province of Dalmatia, with the full name “Colonia Martia Ivlia Salona” 48 year BC. Sightseeing of the Porta Caesarea, monumental building, amphitheater, numerous spas, villas with the polychrome mosaics, cemetery … Break for lunch and return to Split. Visit to the archaeological museum with a valuable Greek-Hellenistic, Roman provincial, late antique and numismatic collections. Evening free for independent exploration of the ancient city. Dinner and overnight.

 

  1. day: SPLIT / Breakfast. Full day sightseeing of the city. Tour of Gold, Silver, Iron and Brass Gate, Vestibuluom (imperial court), the Temple of Jupiter and Diocletian’s Palace with the Peristyle. Basements of Diocletian’s Palace, with its perimeter walls and remarkably preserved cult center, represent the best preserved ancient complex of its kind. Lunch at a seaside restaurant. Afternoon is left for the visit to the gallery of the most prominent Croatian artist Ivan Mestrovic, located in a villa inspired by classic architecture. Dinner and overnight

9.day: METKOVIĆ -DUBROVNIK / After breakfast, departure to the south, to the village of Vid near Metkovic. Vid / antique Narona (1st century BC, Colonia Ivlia Narona) until 1995 was known only to locals, historians and archaeologists, was the city on the area of 25 hectars. 16 magnificant sculptures were found with the remains of the city. Visit to the Archaeological Museum Narona, built above the ancient temple built around the 10th century BC. The museum contains 900 artifacts found in the temple and on the Forum). The break for lunch at a traditional restaurant near the Neretva River with live local music. After lunch, we will continue towards Dubrovnik, renaissance pearl of the Adriatic, city protected by UNESCO, the world-famous cultural heritage. Accommodation in a hotel. We suggest a walk along Stradun, the famous street of Dubrovnik. Dinner and overnight.

 

  1. day DUBROVNIK / Breakfast. Morning city tour; Pile overlooking the Lovrijenac fortress, the Rector’s Palace,Church of St. Vlah, the Cathedral, the Onofrio Fountain … Departure from Dubrovnik after lunch.
